Let me tell you a short story happened to myself and one of our customers. The customer has a team with shared data in Google Drive through Business account. Looks correct at the first glance, but the story unrolls when some team members started seeing personal data from the owner. Not a good thing, right? The customer called us for help how to segregate the data between personal and work accounts. We gave a training how to manage data, where to keep things, when to turn on automatic photo uploads, etc.
But the interesting thing is that data has never been backed up. I mean Google Drive does backup the data, but only within its Drive. I think most of us have heard a story when Google accidentally deleted all data of Norway Pension Fund. Clouds are not that secure like marketers try to sell them. So we both agreed to have an independent backup system to be convenient insurance for such cases. Even when a team member can delete something, it will get unnoticed passed Googles’ 90 days and will be removed forever. Independent backup system in your office will keep the data up to date with all historical versions. Just to sleep calm. As of my personal story – lost all my emails and 5 web-sites about 10 years ago, when my internet provider, who was hosting my data, suddenly wiped out my servers. 10 years of data was gone. Fortunately I had multiple copies of data done daily and monthly, so we could recover a weekly old backup.
Keep in mind this. The whole setup is not complicated and can save you a lot in a long run. Even family photos, huh?
